About Us

Welcome from Gary

Thank you for viewing our site.  I am Gary Fox, the Executive Director, and I would like to welcome you and tell you a little more about us. Our successes are due to riders like you, our committed staff, our volunteer drivers and bus drivers, and our volunteer Board of Directors.  If you would like to talk us, please contact us by phone, e-mail or fax, or you can attend one of the Board of Directors meetings which are open to the public.

You can also find information about our fleet, public notices, and employment opportunities.

Who is CRT?  Connecticut River Transit, Inc (CRT) is the designated public transit provider for Southern Windsor and Windham Counties. The short version of CRT’s mission statement: CRT provides public transportation for residents and visitors in Windham and Southern Windsor Counties. Our goal is to say “yes” when anyone calls for transportation in our service area.

Mission Statement.  Connecticut River Transit, Inc. coordinates public transportation services among public transit, human services providers, community volunteers, employers, and the traveling public to create a seamless and integrated public transit system that will serve the public, support the economy, and provide connectivity in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. We were established in November, 2003, and are a private non-profit public transportation company now providing about 140,000 trips annually in Windham and Southern Windsor Counties, Vermont, a 30% growth in ridership since last year.  Our funds of over $2 million are channeled into the local economy. Contributions come from towns, hospitals, state departments, businesses and individuals; contributions leverage matching committed government awards from the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), the Federal Transit Administration, Medicaid, and area human service agencies.

In 2004, VTrans selected CRT and one other transportation provider in Vermont to develop innovative collaborative policies and procedures to ensure that all services are open to the general public, and are carefully designed and managed to meet the needs of residents and visitors including employees, job seekers, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, in the most flexible and cost-effective manner. CRT actively and successfully implements coordinated transit initiatives under the VTrans program.

CRT Success.  Success of the Coordinated Service Delivery (CSD) system is demonstrated by the steady increase in ridership on the Dial-A-Ride fully coordinated bus services that began during Fiscal Year 2005-2006, and the increase in productivity as evidenced by the increase in trips per hour:

Fiscal Year Annual Trips Annual Hours  Productivity
FY End June 30 2004 11,400 non CSD  5,500 2.07 Trips / Hour
FY End June 30 2005 23,000 began CSD 8,800 2.61 Trips / Hour
FY End June 30 2006 30,000 CSD  11,300 2.65 Trips / Hour

CRT’s overall success providing service is demonstrated by the steady 30% annual increase in ridership and the increase in productivity as evidenced by the drop in cost per trip.

Fiscal Year Annual Trips Annual Cost   Productivity
FY End June 30 2005 109,000 $1,680,000 $15.41 / trip
FY End June 30 2006 138,000 $2,076,000 $15.04 / trip
